Flying Like a Bird
04:25
|
|||
Nesting on the bookshelf
Marking my place in a story just begun
A photograph from the early chapters
Of a metal band without a drum
It was the summer of 1999
First I held a guitar on stage
About the time I get nostalgic
Is when I know it’s time to turn the page
I thought I was flying like a bird
But I was just falling
Aloft wings of wax
I heard a voice calling
I rose up to the sound
A calm and mystic realm
Thought I was flying like a bird
Leafing through the photos
Getting down, flight feathers coming in
The Red Hot Chili Peppers catalog was my book of hymns
It was the summer of 2001
In a garage on south San Juan
Taking myself too seriously I should of just had more fun
I thought I was flying like a bird
But I was just falling
Aloft wings of wax
I heard a voice calling
I rose up to the sound
A calm and mystic realm
Thought I was flying like a bird
Maybe I was flying like a bird
Pulling back the plastic sheet
To add the photos from last night
I could tell from the look on Chad’s face
That the band was sounding tight
That’s when it struck me
Glory is less important than grace
The resonance is inside of me
It’s not something for me to chase
If there’s one thing that I’ve learned
Since my hands first touched these strings
It’s that birds don’t dream of flying
They just flap their wings
I thought I was flying like a bird
Maybe I’m just falling
Aloft wings of wax I hear a voice calling
I rise up to the sound
A calm and mystic realm
Thought I was flying like a bird
Maybe I’m flying like a bird
I thought I was flying like a bird
Maybe I’m just falling
Aloft wings of wax
I heard a voice calling
I rose up to the sound
A calm and mystic realm
Thought I was flying like a bird
Maybe I’m flying like a bird

Roots and Wings
02:53
|
|||
Mama gave me roots
Daddy gave me wings
Mama gave me breath
Dad taught me to sing
Mama gave me air
Daddy gave me a feather
Mama knew the seasons
Dad knew the weather
Mama gave me roots
Daddy gave me wings
Mama gave me breath
Dad taught me to sing
Mama gave me sun
Daddy gave me shade
Mama was light
Dad knew what darkness weighed
Dad knew what darkness weighed
I am a hair
On an upside down tree
I am a branch
In my family
Mama gave me roots
Daddy gave me wings
Mama gave me breath
Dad taught me to sing

Going to the City
03:38
|
|||
Highway 160
Across La Veta Pass
Past The Acorn
Where we stopped for gas
The smell of piñon
That earthy note of fall
Going, going to the city
After we’d fill up
We’d catch I-25
World starts spinning faster
Further east of the divide
So when you grow up
You dream of when you were young
But in those days
you couldn’t wait for these to come
Going, going to the city
Going, going to the city
Going, going to the city
Further up north
More scars upon the land
Zeros and ones
Replace the heart and the hand
Is this a plot twist, or is it part of the plan?
To grow further from nature is the nature of the man
Going, going to the city
Going, going to the city
Going, going to the city
To grow further from nature is the nature of the man
To grow further from nature is the nature of the man
To grow further from nature is the nature of the man
To grow further from nature is the nature of the man
Going, going to the city
Going, going to the city
Going, going to the city

The Truth We Tell
03:36
|
|||
My inability to find the words
Doesn’t change the way I feel
I love my crazy family
And I always will
I know I seldom call on the phone
And at times you feel all alone
You’re on my mind more than you know
Walking beside me wherever I go
Yet on our paths, we march alone
The hurt of the past is frost on our bones
To hold it in is to drown in the well
It’s time to listen to each other and the truth that we tell
Days turn to weeks, weeks into years
The lump in my throat is words nobody hears
Still hope springs, inside my chest
Trickling through the cracks of the mess
We share red blood cells, white ones too
I wanna share my world with you
I wanna share hope, even despair
Cause without love what is there?
Yet on our paths, we march alone
The hurt of the past is frost on our bones
To hold it in is to drown in the well
It’s time to listen to each other and the truth that we tell
If I drove all through the night
And showed up at your door
Would you let me in to talk?
Or would you say that you’ve heard it all before?
Yet on our own paths, we march alone
The hurt of the past is frost on our bones
To hold it in is to drown in the well
It’s time to listen to each other and the truth that we tell
It’s time to listen

The New Warrior
05:00
|
|||
The new warrior needs no sword
For her heart is made of stillness
Draws no borders and claims no flags
Just expands her lungs with fullness
The weapons that she wields
Are compassion and insight
It’s not a battle between the good guys and the bad guys
We all contain the shadows and the light
The new warrior lays down her pride
And opens her heart to listen
Uses her quiver of words carefully
A sentry on a cushion
The weapons that she wields
Are compassion and insight
It’s not a battle between the good guys and the bad guys
We all contain the shadows and the light
Take off your armor
Let your light shine
Break down the barriers
They’re only in your mind
Take off your armor
Let your light shine
Break down the barriers
They’re only in your mind
Only in your mind
Only in your mind
They’re only in your mind
Only in your mind
The heat of compassion can burn us up
Gotta temper it with cool wisdom
From that space we can understand
The radical interdependence of all systems
The weapons that we wield
Are compassion and insight
It’s not a battle between the good guys and the bad guys
We all contain the shadows and the light
We all contain the shadows and the light

Too Much Too Soon
03:36
|
|||
I took you out on a picnic
You weren’t a walk in the park
The bread was too light
The chocolate too dark
All those stinky cheeses
That fancy french wine
I spent all my money
Trying to make you mine
You said that it was too much too soon
It was too much too soon
I wrote you a ten page letter
You sent me back a sticky note
You said that it was too much too soon
I sprayed a mist of my cologne on the pages
Used a wax seal too
All that romance don’t mean nothing
If you don’t love me too
You said that it was too much too soon
It was too much too soon
I sent you a dozen roses
Like the commercials say to do
You said that it was too much too soon
I spent the extra bucks on the vase
Flower food too
All that romance don’t mean nothing
If you don’t love me too
Drove past your place
Hoping to stop and say how are you
But you were saying goodbye
Kissing someone new
You said that it was too much too soon
It was too much too soon
You said that it was too much too soon
It was too much too soon

'42 Ford
03:53
|
|||
Jacob Jeffrey Jones
Was a triple threat
Had his pick of the girls in the twelfth grade
Kathleen Susan Clark
Was his drug of choice
He lived to take her out on a Friday night
Bagging groceries
Saving up his cash
To buy a car for the drive-in movies
But there's no such thing as a ‘42 Ford
No such thing as a ‘42
No such thing as a ‘42 Ford
Old Henry wasn't building cars that year
Every science class
Jacob passed her notes
Scribbled lines about his plans
Underneath the stars
He could hold her hand
As they watched the silver screen
Bagging groceries
Saving up his cash
To buy a car for the drive-in movies
But there's no such thing as a ‘42 Ford
No such thing as a ‘42
No such thing as a 42' Ford
Old Henry wasn't building cars that year
Walking after school
Jacob checks the mail
No love letters just a notice
Time to go to war
Serve your Uncle Sam
Time to go and be a man
With his last goodbye
Came a wedding ring
“I’ll be back for the drive-in movies”
But there's no such thing as a 42' Ford
No such thing as a ‘42
No such thing as a 42' Ford
Old Henry wasn't building cars that year
Old Henry wasn't building cars that year

That Old House
03:53
|
|||
Kettle on the gas stove
Dwelling made of sand
Shadow of a porch light
The flicker of a fan
Every room just like a hallway
No comfy chair to plop
Skeletons in the closet
Next to the broom and mop
That old house ain’t home no more
That old house wasn’t a home
That old house ain’t home no more
That old house wasn’t a home
Dishes in the kitchen
Lots of time in the sink
Solitary dinners
Gave lots of time to think
Ghosts in the floorboards
Time can hear them all
A pale imitation
Echoing each footfall
That old house ain’t home no more
That old house wasn’t a home
That old house ain’t home no more
That old house wasn’t a home
Fully loaded U-haul
Setting sun is near
Driving through the darkness
Looking in the rear-view mirror
That old house ain’t home no more
That old house wasn’t a home
That old house ain’t home no more
That old house wasn’t a home
Kettle on the gas stove

Elemental Love
03:52
|
|||
You have fire
I have rain
A taste of wonder in my mouth
Like tapas in Spain
You have earth
I have air
Like food and water
We're the perfect pair
Our love is elemental
Not elementary
No more complex than it needs to be
Our love is elemental
Not elementary
No more complex than it needs to be
No simpler, could we
You have flames
A tinderbox
Combine with water
For the building blocks
You have soil
Rich and pure
A calming breath
Whenever you're near
Our love is elemental
Not elementary
No more complex than it needs to be
Our love is elemental
Not elementary
No more complex than it needs to be
No simpler
You have fire
I have rain
A taste of wonder in my mouth
Like tapas in Spain
You have earth
I have air
Like food and water
We're the perfect pair
Our love is elemental
Not elementary
No more complex than it needs to be
Our love is elemental
Not elementary
No more complex than it needs to be
No simpler could we

Twirling in Time
03:32
|
|||
Barefoot ballerina in the tall green grass
Eyes that sparkle like the sprinkles on a cake
Mama's scarfs are a makeshift tutu
The stage is this side of the rake
Crusted jam on her flailing fingertips
Neon boogers in her nose
Chuckling like a chasing chipmunk
She feels the rhythm in her toes
Sway in the sun
Twirling in time
Like a swan in a lake she has an easy and natural grace
Summer song on a carefree dreamy day
Soaring silver stereo
Pot belly and a saggy diaper butt
That she shakes from to and fro
She spins like her mermaid mobile
That hangs above her bed
When she sleeps it waltzes above her
Into the dreams in her head
Sway in the sun
Twirling in time
Like a swan in a lake she has an easy and natural grace
Like a swan in a lake she has an easy and natural grace
Years have passed now she's twenty two years older
Got a dancer of her own
She wears a gilded golden gown with pink polka dots
One her nana had sewn
Her daughter falls down and gets right back up
May she always be this way
Growing like a sunflower in July
More like her mother everyday
Sway in the sun
Twirling in time
Like a swan in a lake she has an easy and natural grace

Brother Moon
03:43
|
|||
I am brother moon
I am sister sun
Won't you just come out?
Won't you just come?
Out from mother's earth
See your father’s eyes
Won't you just come out?
Won't you just come?
Your aunts were all stars
Their light shines from long ago
Uncle a big black hole
He burned out
I can't see ya
But I know you’re there
I can feel ya
Reflecting
I can't see ya
But I know you’re there
I can feel ya
Protecting
We have watched you grow
Though we've yet to know
Won't you just come out?
Won't you just come?
When we plant the seed
The seasons stop to bleed
Won't you just come out?
Won't you just come?
Through all space and time
The gravity of now
An assembly of dust
Until we rust
I can't see ya
But I know you’re there
I can feel ya
Reflecting
I can't see ya
But I know you’re there
I can feel ya
Protecting
